1960's

After clinching the Grand Prize in Tawag ng Tanghalan in 1967, Nora Aunor made her debut as a guest performer for celebrated American singer Timi Yuro during a concert at the Araneta Coliseum. Her captivating voice soon earned her spots on popular television programs such as An Evening with Pilita, Carmen on Camera, and the variety show Oras ng Ligaya on Channel 13. She also became a familiar voice on DZXL radio programs like Operetang Putol-Putol and Fiesta Extravaganza.
Though she began her career as a singer, Aunor’s journey into the world of cinema began when Dr. Jose Perez, the esteemed chairman of Sampaguita Pictures, extended a personal invitation through German Moreno, asking if she would consider acting. On October 2, 1967, she signed a non-exclusive eight-picture contract with Sampaguita Pictures, with the assurance that her films would include singing parts. That year, she appeared in six films—each role modest, each performance a spark of what was to come.
When her contract with Sampaguita expired in 1969, Nora ventured into other studios. It was with Tower Productions that she landed her first leading role, opposite Tirso Cruz III, in The Musical Teenage Idols. The film became a box-office sensation and marked the birth of a new phenomenon in Philippine cinema. Nora Aunor’s rise to superstardom had only just begun.
