Nora Aunor began making fewer films around the turn of the millennium than she had previously. They were all, however, award-winning films that gained widespread acclaim both in the Philippines and internationally.
Nora's final film before her 8-year absence from Philippine showbiz was "Naglalayag" in 2004. Nora received her third International Best Actress award from Brussels, Belgium, for the film.
Nora made two independent films in 2010 while in the United States and was named one of the "10 Best Asian Actresses of the Decade" by the Green Planet Movie Awards in Hollywood.
In 2011, after almost 8 years of hiatus, Nora came back to the Philippines and made several films, including "Thy Womb" which gave her multiple nominations abroad, and 4 International Best Actress Awards from Venice, Brisbane, Hongkong, and Sakhalin.
Nora got the Gawad Plaridel Award from the University of the Philippines in 2014 and was one of the awardees of the Gusi Peace Prize in 2015. She was also conferred the Gawad CCP para sa Sining in 2015.

In 2022, She was given the Order of National Artist of the Philippines.
