1990's

The 1990s saw Nora Aunor’s career take a more selective and deliberate turn. While she made only ten films during the decade—a stark contrast to the prolific output of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, when she averaged five films a year—her focus on quality over quantity proved to be the key. Eight of those ten films earned critical acclaim, with Aunor receiving numerous Best Actress nominations and awards, underscoring her enduring talent.

Aunor’s international recognition flourished during this period. In 1995, she won her first International Best Actress Award for her poignant portrayal in The Flor Contemplacion Story at the 19th Cairo International Film Festival. The film also garnered the prestigious Golden Pyramid Award for Best Picture. Just two years later, in 1997, she claimed her second International Best Actress Award for Bakit May Kahapon Pa? at the 1st East Asian Film and TV Festival in Malaysia.

In 1991, Aunor swept all of the best actress honors for her role in Andrea, Paano Ba Ang Maging Isang Ina?, cementing her place as one of the most revered actresses in Philippine cinema. Five years later, The Flor Contemplacion Story again showcased her unmatched ability to embody complex, real-life figures.

In 1999, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) conferred upon her the Centennial Honor for the Arts, a tribute to her immense contributions to Filipino culture. As part of the centennial celebration, Aunor was awarded the title of "Actress of the Century," a rare and well-deserved acknowledgment of her extraordinary impact on Philippine cinema.
