The 1970s belonged to Nora Aunor. Dubbed the “Superstar,” she rose to unprecedented heights, driven by the staggering box-office success of her films and the unwavering devotion of millions of fans. Her love team with Tirso Cruz III captivated the nation, breaking records time and again. Among their many collaborations, Guy and Pip remains the most iconic. Premiering during the Manila Film Festival on June 20, 1971, the film was a phenomenal success—running for six months in theaters and drawing over four million viewers. It earned more than 8 million pesos, making it the highest-grossing Filipino film of its time, a record it held for years even when adjusted for inflation.

This decade also marked Nora Aunor’s evolution from teen idol to serious actress. Her performance in Nasaan Ka, Inay? earned her first acting nomination from the Citizens Council for Mass Media in 1971. The following year, she won her first Best Actress award for And God Smiled at Me at the Quezon City Film Festival, and received her first FAMAS nomination for Gift of Love.

Determined to pursue meaningful and artistically driven projects, she starred in critically acclaimed films such as Paruparong Itim, Fe, Esperanza, Caridad, Banaue, Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo, Atsay, Ikaw ay Akin, and Ina Ka ng Ina Mo. In 1973, she founded her own production company, NV Productions—further cementing her role not just as a performer, but as a creative force shaping the future of Philippine cinema.
