Filipinos who won in a Continental Film Awards

What is a Continental Film awards? The Continental film awards is presented by organizations to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements in their respective Continents. The first continent to give out this award is Europe when the European Film Academy presented the "European Film Awards" to honor the films made in Europe and is restricted to European producers, directors and actors only. In 2007, The “European Parliament LUX Prize” was also established to illuminate the public debate on European integration and to facilitate the diffusion of European films in European Union. In 2005, Peace Anyiam-Osigew and is run through African Film Academy founded the AMAA or the “Africa Movie Academy Awards” to honor films from African Region. "Premios Platino del Coine Iberoamericano" or the Platino awards was established in 2013. This is to honor films from Iberian American region comprising of countries or territories where Spanish or Portuguese are predominant languages, usually former territories of Portugal or Spain. And then you have the “Lumieres Awards” given to the French Speaking countries. The Asian Film industry is not far behind, The Asia Pacific Screen Awards and the Asian Film Awards are two of the most prestigious award-giving bodies in the World; they are called the continental award, for they are giving recognition to excellent films in the region. The Asian Film Awards was the first to be established. Inaugurated on March 2007 for the sole purpose of celebrating the excellence in Asian cinema through annual presentation of awards to the many diverse talents and films that make up the dynamic film industries of the region. The Asia Pacific Screen Award was also inaugurated the same year, it was established on November 2007 to encourage dialogue and collaboration for the region’s filmmakers. The Academy also strives to further nurture the talents from the region. The APSA has a wider scope though because it does not only recognize the films from the Asian region but also the countries in the Pacific like Australia where it is based. The Philippines has won several awards from both AFA and APSA, being nominated on this prestigious award-giving body is already an honor for the country and for any individual. APSA, in particular, has more than 70 countries and areas engaged in it and AFA has all the countries in Asia being part of it. So, winning an award here is already a great feat for anybody. Here is the list of Filipinos who won in Asian Film Awards and Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Asian Film Awards 1. Gina Pareño (Best Supporting Actress) 2009

Gina won the best-supporting-actress award besting 4 other Asian actresses including Jaclyn Jose for her role in "Serbis". She also won the Pacific Meridian International Film Festival Award for Best Actress on the same year. 2. Sharmaine Buencmino (Best Supporting Actress) 2012 Sharmaine bested her Asian counterparts by winning the best-supporting actress in 2012. She won for her role in Niño. 3. Eddie Garcia (Best Actor) 2013

Eddie Garcia already won Best Actor at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards prior to AFA. He also bested Choi Min Sik, the Korean superstar who won the APSA the previous year for the Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time. He won for his role as an aging gay man in the film "Bwakaw" Asia Pacific Screen Awards 1. Brillante Mendoza (Best Director) 2012

This Brilliant Filipino director won his first APSA for the film "Thy Womb." Brillante already won several awards internationally including the Best Director in Cannes. 2. Hasmine Killip (Best Performance by an Actress) 2016

Hasmine won the Best the actress award besting 4 other actresses from Korea, Russia and Turkey. She won several best actress awards for her role in "Pamilya Ordinaryo" including the London East Asia Film Festival. Double Victory:

NORA AUNOR

So far, she is the only Filipino actor to achieve a double victory from APSA and AFA. She won for her role as a Badjao midwife who can't give her husband a child in "Thy Womb." Nora perfectly portrayed the role of Shaleha, It was practically a wordless performance, her face alone registering a tidal wave of emotions — sadness and joy, resentment and resignation, pain and ecstasy, defeat and triumph, often all at once, thus giving her multiple local awards and 4 international awards, including APSA, AFA and Venice. She won the APSA on Nov. 2012 and the AFA on March 2013. Aunor became the fourth actor from the region to win the back to back victory. Filipinos are indeed very talented, apart from the awards won, Filipino talents are consistently nominated in different categories from these continental film awards. I am certain that in the future, more and more Filipinos will win the APSA and AFA.
